in Bank Accounts, Downloading, and Categorization (Windows)
I am using Quicken Deluxe 2017. I have two accounts, one for a checking account and one for a credit card. When I pay my credit card bill, I manually register the transaction as a transfer from my checking account to my credit card. When the transactions appear in the bank's download data, whichever is the first one to come in gets matched to the manual transaction. I cannot find a way to match the second transaction to the manual one.
Example:
Checking account: AccChecking
Credit card account: AccCredit
Manual transaction: Appears in AccChecking as charge with category [AccCredit] and in AccCredit as payment with category [AccChecking].
Download transactions from checking account: in AccChecking register the manual transaction has 'New match' in the rightmost column and I can accept the match.
Download transactions from credit card: In AccCredit I have two transactions for the same amount, one that is the original manual transaction, and one that is marked as 'New' in the rightmost column. I cannot match the two transactions, even though in fact they are the same. Since the transaction appears twice, the balance is now screwed up. If I delete the manual transaction to fix the balance then it will disappear from the AccChecking as well (to be expected, since it is the same transaction) and the balance in AccChecking is now wrong. If I delete the newly downloaded transaction, then the next time I sync with the bank, the transaction will be downloaded again (to be expected, since I removed it from the register), and the balance on AccCredit is again screwed up.
Bottom line is that only by matching the two transaction will I get consistent and accurate registers. Does anybody know how I can do that?

- If the register is using Automatic entry, when the blue dot transaction should have matched a red pencil transaction, I suggest you left-click on the red pencil and choose Match to a downloaded transaction. After you accept the match, the red pencil transaction and the blue dot transaction will become a blue pencil transaction.
If the register is not using Automatic entry, select the New transaction in the Downloaded Transactions tab at the bottom of the register and Edit > Match manually.0 - Sherlock, thank you for your answer. I am using automatic entry, but the manual transaction is a transfer between accounts and it shows up in both registers. Once it is matched in ONE, the red pencil disappears from BOTH registers. So when I get the new download data in my SECOND register, I do not have the red pencil to use.
Sorry about the caps, I did not mean to shout. I would have used bold for emphasis, but alas, it is not available.
Quicken people, if you are reading, I have a question for you. Why I can only match a manual transaction to a downloaded transaction but not the other way around? In other words, why isn't there an option for me on any transaction to select another to match it with. Equality (or equivalency) is symmetric: if a = b then b = a. Basic arithmetic. Which is the basis of accounting. Which is what Quicken is supposed to help people do. (And if you tell me that I can do that if I disable automatic entry, I am so going to roll my eyes.) - I am only using automatic entry in one register and only because I am not able to disable the functionality. I have not been able to reproduce the manual match issue you described but I am using Quicken 2019 R19.52.
There is a recent quirk occurring on an automatic match of a transfer. Instead of the blue pencil, the Status is empty. I only noticed it because I was looking for the transfer transaction. Weird. It's behaving like its been reviewed. The other end of the transfer does still have its red pencil.
As I recall, there was an issue when I manually matched transfer transactions using automatic entry in earlier versions which is one of the reasons I've avoided using the feature. When I would manually match an imported transaction to a transfer transaction, it would break the transfer transaction. The category field set to the other account was cleared. The transaction at other end would still exist and reference the original account but there was no matching transaction. I always tried to make certain I entered the transfer transactions accurately before importing into this account. When I goofed, instead of matching the transfer transaction, I would delete the imported transaction and mark the manually entered transaction as cleared (and I'd set the Download Status Posting Date). What a pain.0 - Sherlock, for me automatic entry is important on all accounts. It's actually one of the few reasons I use Quicken.
I wonder how recent this quirk is. The original transaction happened a couple of weeks ago. That is when I downloaded the data from the bank for the checking account, where the transaction was already present. Naturally I accepted the match offered in the checking account register. Yesterday I downloaded the data from the credit card and now I have two transactions in the credit card register with no way to match them.
I think I am going to end up deleting the manual transaction and having only the downloaded ones. I will not be able to link them as a transfer would, but at least the registers will be accurate.
Sherlock, thank you for your help.
Quicken, you found another way to disappoint. At this point I am using Quicken only because I have not found something better, but that does not mean that Quicken is anywhere near 'acceptable' level, let alone 'good'. I will continue to look for something else at least once a month.
Just a thought.. Are you able to coerce the red pencil to reappear on he transfer transaction in the second register by resetting the Clr status to Uncleared? If so, you should then be able manually match it to downloaded transaction.Sherlock, for me automatic entry is important on all accounts. It's actually one of the few reasons I use Quicken.

I just started using Quicken and I only got the last 90 days of transactions. How do I get the older transactions downloaded and into my account?

How To Turn Off Automatic Quicken Account Downloads For Mac Download
- edited December 2018Note:
Make a backup of your data file first. It is always a good practice to do so when you are doing something for the first time.
Also, for this process, record the ending balance of the account for later reference.
This applies only to Quicken for Windows.
The financial institution (FI) decides how far back to go with the initial download, usually 60-90 days. You may be able to download more history if you go to the FI's website and download a Web Connect .QFX (not .QXF file) file. The website may refer to it as downloading or exporting, but the idea is to get the transactions to your computer so that they can be imported. Some FIs make you do it by month, others allow you to specify a date range, so it might take several downloads to get it all.
The browser will ask if you want to 'open' or 'save' the file, either will work. If you choose 'open', Quicken will start (if it is not already running) and try to process the download just like your initial download. If you chose 'save', remember where it is stored on your computer (the Downloads folder is a great location). Then start Quicken and do File->File Import->Web Connect, the rest of the process is the same as before.
If Quicken tries to create a new account, try to change it to 'link' to the existing account. If that is not possible, cancel the download/import to prevent a new account from being created (if you 'saved' the file, you won't have to download it again). Quicken is not recognizing the FI information in the download as the same as the existing account, so it wants to create a new account.
What you need to do is to disable One Step Update (OSU) on the existing account to make it available for 'linking'. To disable OSU, go to the existing account's register and do a Ctrl+Shift+E. This will take you to the Account Details window for the account. Select the Online Services tab and then click on 'disable' or 'deactivate'. Once disabled, you can do the download again. If you 'saved', your download is still good, just do the import again.
After you have downloaded and accepted all of the historical data that you want or can get, you will need to activate OSU again if you had to de-activate it earlier. That process is the same as before, but this time the button should say 'activate' or 'enable'.
Now, there is one last thing you need to do, you need to change the Opening Balance transaction to compensate for the added history which was not taken into consideration when the account was originally created. Find that transaction and change its date so that it is the oldest transaction in the register. You will need to change the amount so that the new ending balance is the same as the one from before starting this process (remember, you recorded it somewhere). Since by definition, the Opening Balance is a reconciled transaction whose category points back to the same account, Quicken will warn you about it. In this instance, it is okay and you can ignore the warning. It is probably the only time you can ignore a warning.
Now, with OSU re-activated and your Opening Balance transaction modified, you should be good to go.-splasher using Q since 1996 - QW 2017 & Subscription - Win10
